An Event-Ful Conversation: Jessica
Every event professional at Red Velvet Events is an invaluable part of a dynamic team. In our “An Event-Ful Conversation” blog series, you’ll get to know these amazing people a little better. Learn how they got into this fast-paced industry, how they manage mega-level multitasking and what special skills they bring to the table to help RVE Outplan. Outplay. Outparty!
Q) Everyone has that “Aha!” moment in their life when they figure out what they really wanted to do as a career. What was the first sign that you were meant for the events and meeting industry?
A) In my first year in an events role, I worked on a college football championship bowl tailgate. I only played a small part on the planning team, but one task was helping to produce the giveaway fan-clappers we handed out to all the guests. The moment when I sat down in the stadium, after a wildly successful tailgate, and saw THOUSANDS of people excitedly waving those fan-clappers, and realized I could be in a job bringing pure joy to so many people, I was totally hooked. All the hard work and very long hours to bring this three hour event together was worth it to see those happy faces!
Q) How did you learn about Red Velvet Events?
A) Red Velvet produced an event next door to an event I was working on which was much cooler, so I remember referring guests over to that event! When I was looking to make a transition, a good friend and colleague recommended RVE as she knew Cindy and the awesome reputation RVE had for creating well-executed events.
Q) RVE’s love for Austin is well known. What’s your very favorite thing about Austin?
A) I love the film culture in Austin, anchored by Alamo Drafthouse’s continually innovative programming and the energy that comes from SXSW Film. I have seen cooler films here with a more excited crowd than any other place I lived. I also love the Austin landscape – the ever present Town Lake that I pass over every morning and evening, the rolling hills when you start to head out of town, and the wild green scapes everywhere you go. Living in a drought-stricken California the last few years has made me appreciate the abundant greens and grasses here!
Q) Nothing’s perfect – not even our beloved city. If money and time were no object, what’s the one thing you would change about Austin?
A) Somehow, someway, I would change the weather! I’m a fog baby used to the cold summers of San Francisco, so dealing with temperatures over 75 degrees turn me into a wimp. If Austin could relocate a few hundred miles north, that would be perfect.
Q) Everyone says they’re detailed-oriented. But what secret trait about you really demonstrates your commitment to order and details?
A) I won’t hesitate to break out a spreadsheet for fun. There have been a few occasions that required massive complex spreadsheets – usually for vacation planning! My three week trip to New Zealand had a spreadsheet with at least 5 tabs, and my recent move to Austin from California also required a multi-tab spreadsheet to mark everything from mileage between stops on the road trip to Texas, to steps required for registering my car upon arrival, to every place I’d need to update my mailing address. If it’s for work or fun, spreadsheets help me figure out what’s next!
