Room for More
Austin’s growth and expansion can lead to some headaches; but if you’re planning an event, that same growth and expansion is great because it’s leading to a lot more venue choices. But what do you do if you’re looking for a licensed event space for a larger group of guests – say, 6,000 people and up?
The good news is that central Texas now has more options than ever for larger groups. However, we’re finding that even with new offerings, there’s still not enough supply to meet the demand. Throw in the city’s street closure moratorium, and things get tricky. Basically, there is currently a moratorium to not grant permission for any events that require a significant street closure (for example, shutting down 2nd Street or Rainey Street). So if you’re looking to plan an event that needs a street closure, it’s probably not going to happen until at least after November 2016.
So where can larger groups of guests go?
The current options include Brazos Hall, the ACL Moody Theater, the Palmer Events Center, the Long Center, and the Palm Door on Sixth. Unfortunately, during really large conventions (aka City Wides) or a week with multiple conventions, these options can become limited. And with Austin Music Hall going away, Austin could use a large venue close to downtown now more than ever. Ideally, we’d love to see the warehouse close to the Four Seasons and / or the Statesman offices turned into an event space, but we know that probably won’t happen.
In the meantime, we’ll keep our ears to the ground and our fingers crossed that another great option for larger groups comes up – and with all of Austin’s growth and popularity, we’re definitely grateful to have the venues we still have!
