Why It’s Getting Harder and Harder to Find Hotel Event Space in Austin
Austin has more hotels than ever before, offering a wide range of event spaces to meet different budgets and numbers of guests. But as more and more people are finding out, it’s not getting any easier to book an event at an Austin hotel. In fact, some report that it’s actually getting more difficult. Not too long ago, you could book a hotel space six months or less in advance. Now, you’re lucky if you can get your first choice of dates a year in advance.
At RVE, we’ve got the inside scoop on this dilemma: what’s causing it, and how to work around it.
Basically, the issue is supply and demand. There may be a lot more event space these days, but the demand has gone up sharply. On one hand, that can be frustrating if you’ve got your heart set on a certain space. But on the other hand, keep in mind that Austin has the great fortune to be an awesome city hosting all sizes of conventions – and these events pump money straight back into the local economy!
Also, try to think of this situation from the hotel’s perspective. Coordinating events is like a giant jigsaw puzzle. They want your business, but they also have to work around existing contracts, meeting space, and sleeping room needs.
For the time being, try to have patience when planning a hotel event in Austin. The city is in the process of building another convention hotel; once that opens in 2017, we’ll have even more hotel rooms in our inventory. But for now, remember to work with a meeting or event planner to get the best possible leverage and deals you wouldn’t be able to find on your own. And stay flexible with your dates.
