When I first started Red Velvet Events, I noticed that a lot of event industry-related businesses did not last beyond three years. It was a pattern I saw often – and, unfortunately, continue to see today. Why do I think the failure rate in this industry is still so high? Honestly, I think the number one reason is that some companies aren’t realistic about how much work it was going to take to make their goal numbers. This is true with any startup business, not just event planning – though an event planning business can, in many ways, be harder to get off the ground than your average startup, depending on what you’re charging for time and services.
After reading and rereading that article, I’ve decided the most important things that strong small business owners do – and the things I focus on the most at my own company – are the following:
- Sticking to their goals.
- Focusing more on having a positive attitude.
- Always being open and receptive to feedback.
- Understanding their local market.
- Being driven by technology.
